CLINICS

Southborough Lane Surgery aims to provide a full range of medical services. These include:

Antenatal Clinic Wednesday 1.30 - 4.00pm

Patients are seen by the midwife at the clinics by appointment.

Asthma Clinic Monday 1.30 - 3.00pm, Thursday 3.00 - 7.00pm and Friday 8.00am - 3.00pm

This is a special clinic for patients with asthma, run by a practice nurse in conjunction with the doctors, to assess, advise and adequately treat your asthma. Appointments can be made through reception.

Blood Pressure Monitoring Monday - Friday 8.00am - 7.30pm

The surgery has a blood pressure monitor in the waiting room which patients may use at any time by requesting a token from reception. The monitor also measures height, weight and pulse and provides a body mass index reading. All blood pressure readings are reviewed by a clinician.

Child Development Programme Wednesday, Friday 11.00am - 12.30pm

(Baby Clinic)

This practice runs a full child development programme which includes immunisation for the infant and pre-school child, development checks, advice and appropriate referral for all childhood problems. For more information contact reception or your health visitor.

This is a schedule of recommended check-ups and immunisations for your child:

8 weeks Full developmental assessment by GP
1st immunisation - Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Polio, Hib, Pneumococcal
3 months 2nd immunisation - Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Polio, Hib, Meningitis C
4 months 3rd immunisation - Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Polio, Hib, Pneumococcal, Meningitis C
8-12 months Full developmental assessment by health visitor
12 months Hib and Meningitis C immunisations, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and Pneumococcal
15 months MMR Booster (3 months after first MMR)
2½ years Developmental review by health visitor
3¼ years Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Polio (Pre-school booster) and MMR (if not already had two doses)

Please telephone the surgery to book the first immunisations and eight-week developmental check for the Wednesday clinic. Other immunisations are available at both clinics from 11.00am - 12.30pm and should be pre-booked by telephoning the surgery.

Cervical Smears

Women aged 25-49 are recommended to have regular cervical smears at three-yearly intervals and women aged 50-64 at five yearly intervals. Please book an appointment with the nurse for this. Please remember to bring a urine sample for routine testing and the date of your last menstrual period. You are advised to only have a shower or light wash on the day of your appointment. Invitations, reminders and results will be sent to you by Bromley Primary Care Trust Cervical Screening Department.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Thursday 2.00 - 7.00pm and Friday 8.30am - 12.30pm

This clinic, run by our respiratory nurse specialist, is for patients with lung-related breathing difficulties. The clinic provides lung assessment, medication and support to patients and their carers. Appointments should be made through reception.

Cardiovascular Disease Clinic Tuesday 2.00 - 5.00pm

This clinic, run by our heart disease nurse specialist, is for patients with a history of stroke or heart disease such as angina or heart attack, including those who have had surgery. Those patients at high risk of heart disease (smokers, overweight, high blood pressure, family history) may also be seen for assessment. Appointments may be made through reception.

Diabetes Clinic Thursday 2.00 - 7.00pm and Friday 8.30am - 12.30pm

For patients with diabetes there is a special clinic run by a practice nurse in conjunction with the doctors to assess, advise and appropriately manage your diabetes. Appointments should be made through reception.

Family Planning Clinic First Saturday of each month, 9.00 - 11.00am

Practice nurses run a clinic providing contraceptive services and follow-up for monitoring purposes. They are able to offer advice and provide a range of contraceptive options. Appointments should be made through reception.

Flu Vaccination

All patients over 65, those with chronic heart, liver, kidney or lung disease, asthma, diabetes and patients who have had a stroke are strongly advised to have a flu vaccination each year. Special clinics are run during September/October and patients are advised to watch for published information on when to attend. Patients who are too infirm to attend surgery may receive their vaccination at home from the district nurse. Please contact reception to arrange this.

Hypertension Checks

Practice nurses are able to see patients with hypertension for blood pressure checks, treatment monitoring and lifestyle advice.

Minor Surgery

There are facilities for the doctors to perform minor surgical procedures such as joint injections and cyst aspirations. A special clinic is run approximately once a month for the treatment of warts. Please ask in reception.

Phlebotomy

The practice nurse or healtcare assistant will only take blood for testing from patients who are very elderly, disabled or too infirm to attend the pathology lab at the local hospital. This service is provided by the district nurse for housebound patients.
