Dental Concerns and NHS GP Services

Thank you for trusting Southborough Lane Surgery as your NHS GP practice. To ensure clarity regarding the care we provide, please note that GP practices, including ours, are unable to provide treatment or advice for dental problems.

NHS Guidance on GP and Dental Care

According to NHS policy, dental problems must be managed by qualified dentists. GPs are not trained or equipped to handle dental conditions, and prescriptions for dental issues should only be provided by a dentist.

GP Services Do Not Cover

We cannot provide evaluation or treatment for:

  1. Toothaches – Pain caused by dental decay, infection, or injury.
  2. Dental Abscesses or Infections – Localised swelling or pain from gum or tooth issues.
  3. Broken, Loose, or Missing Teeth – Including dental appliances like crowns, fillings, or dentures.
  4. Orthodontic Concerns – Such as issues with braces or teeth alignment.
  5. Cosmetic Dentistry – Including teeth whitening or aesthetic procedures.
  6. All dental related treatments or changes to anti-coagulants prior to treatment
(these must be discussed with the dentist)

What You Should Do for Dental Issues

If you have dental concerns, NHS guidelines advise the following:

  1. Routine Care or Emergencies:
    • Register with an NHS dentist for regular care.
    • For urgent dental issues, contact an NHS dentist directly or use NHS 111 to find an emergency dental service.
  2. Emergency Support:
    • NHS 111 can guide you if you’re unable to access an NHS dentist and need urgent help.

Accessing NHS Dental Care

GPs are not trained in dental care, and seeing a dentist is the fastest and safest way to get the right treatment. Please contact a dental professional for any concerns about your teeth, gums, or oral health.

We appreciate your understanding that dental problems must be managed by a dentist under NHS guidelines. Our GP practice is here to support your medical needs and ensure your overall health.
